Every day at least twenty thousand people visit the Sistine Chapel, with peaks of twenty–five thousand during periods of maximum tourist flow. Such visitors come from all cultural backgrounds and speak many different languages. And then there is Michelangelo who, like a bright light that blinds out everything around it, absorbs with his resounding fame everyone’s attention, making it hard to understand the symbolic system of, which Michelangelo belongs to. Those who enter the Sistine Chapel, immediately catapulted into the midst of the crowd and the buzzing noise of many people, will experience confusion, bewilderment and embarrassment. Our beautiful exhibit is intended to help our visitor to understand the reasons which brought about, (between the 15th and 16th centuries), this supreme apex of art and human spirituality, to help understand both the message which the painted images convey, and the styles and artists Michelangelo but also Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio and Signorelli) who put the messages into images. It all started with Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, the great pontiff who brought the Renaissance to Rome and who established the solid alliance between the Church and culture which was to last for centuries. In 1481 (the contract is dated 27 October of that year) Pope Della Rovere commissioned a group of renowned Umbrian and Florentine artists to paint the stories of Christ and Moses, on the right and left walls of the Chapel respectively. Global Exhibits and partners Scripta Maneant, and Musei Vaticani have spent countless hours constructing an entertaining, fun and educational exhibit. We want people all over the world to see the amazing art housed in the Sistine Chapel and to bring it to those who cannot get to Rome.
